Customers often ask “Which cutting of diamond, Belgian or Russian?”

Stores tend to grade down Round Brilliant, a 57-facet diamond with decent cutting of corner-to-corner and identical facets to Belgian cut and the worst case is to Indian cut but don't get confused with Russian diamond.

Russian diamond (Cubic Zirconia) or also known as CZ is an artificial, synthetic diamond with reflection very similar to diamond in naked eyes and cheap price, therefore it is widely used for artificial jewelries.

Whatever a cutting is called, the fact is it only means an origin country facets get cut from but has nothing to do with clarity, weight or color of a diamond at all.

Though a cutting is only one of four main factors (4Cs consist of clarity, carat weight, color and cut) in evaluating a diamond but it is only man-made factor which contributes to color and also covers a flaw. A cutting is a significant factor that makes a diamond sparkle and have decent reflection which can be achieved by not too deep and too shallow cutting as shown in the Perfect Cut picture below. A diamond with too shallow cut allows light to pass through completely, not reflecting back to upper part, thus it doesn't have decent reflection of light – look empty, not sparkle but one with too deep cut isn't decent either having dull or darker look than normal.

Nowadays, nearly all specialized countries have developed their cutting skills to an equipvalent level, be it Belgium, Russia, India, Thailand or China. A cutting done by which country is called accordingly, for example, Thai cut or India cut. The more a cutting is done meticulously, the higher a labor cost. Various wages among different countries contribute to different prices of a diamond. When a manufacturer has a good quality rough diamond – flawless or very few flaws, they tend to invest in cutting to get decent proportion of facets in order to have a nice reflection which is a distinction of diamond.

With diamond being a transparent crystal composed of carbon, each crystal has distinct shapes. Therefore, a cutter needs to plan thoroughly in order to have a process that loses the least substance and achieve the most beautiful shape. Cutting by computer also focuses on losing the least substance. Facets are varied with a rough diamond unearthed: Round, Princess, Oval, Marquise, Pear or Heart cut. Round cut is the most popular shape for brisk selling and buying. Heart cut is the most expensive shape because it loses the most substance in cutting.
